The Best Elopement Locations in California (From Joshua Tree to Big Sur)
One of the most common things couples say when they first reach out is: "We want to elope in California, but we have no idea where." And honestly? We completely understand. California is enormous, and it contains more stunning, wildly different landscapes than most countries.
The coast is nothing like the desert. The desert is nothing like the mountains. And each of them has its own kind of magic — its own light, its own energy, its own particular way of making your wedding photos look like they belong in a magazine.
We've shot elopements and intimate weddings across this entire state, and these are the locations we genuinely love the most. Read through, notice which ones make your heart beat a little faster, and we'll help you figure out the rest.
1. Joshua Tree — The Desert Dream
If there's one location that appears in our couples' inquiries more than any other, it's Joshua Tree. And once you've seen it in person — or even in photos — you understand why.
Joshua Tree is otherworldly. The sculptural trees, the massive boulders, the wide open sky that turns amber and pink and violet as the sun sets — it's the kind of place that feels like it was designed for photographs. Desert elopements here have a raw, cinematic quality that's completely unique.
Best time to visit: October through April, when temperatures are comfortable and the light is extraordinary. Summer can be very hot, though early morning and evening shoots are still possible.
What to expect: Relatively easy access, permit required for ceremonies in the National Park, stunning golden hour light that lasts. Great for couples who love the outdoors but don't want an extreme physical challenge.
2. Big Sur — The Dramatic California Coast
Big Sur is ideal for couples who want a coastal California elopement with real drama and scale. It's also particularly magical for international couples — this is the California of the imagination, and being here for the first time, in your wedding attire, is an experience that doesn't fade.
Best time to visit: Spring and fall offer the clearest skies. Summer can bring morning fog (which is actually beautiful in photos), while the golden hours in September and October are exceptional.
What to expect: Some of the best coastal views you'll find anywhere. More remote than other coastal locations — we recommend planning your accommodations in advance and building in extra time.
3. Torrey Pines — Coastal California Without the Distance
Not every couple has the time or the logistics to make it to Big Sur — and that's completely okay. Torrey Pines, just north of San Diego, offers breathtaking coastal cliffs and ocean views with significantly easier access.
We've shot some of our favorite coastal elopement images here. The reserve itself is stunning — twisted old trees against ocean backdrops — and the light at golden hour rivals anywhere we've been on the California coast.
Best time to visit: Year-round, with exceptional light in fall and winter evenings.
What to expect: Accessible, beautiful, and genuinely impressive. A favorite for couples flying into San Diego or traveling from Southern California.
4. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks — Ancient and Awe-Inspiring
Getting married under a 3,000-year-old tree puts things in perspective. Sequoia and Kings Canyon are among the most awe-inspiring locations we've photographed in — the scale of the trees makes everything feel both tiny and enormous at the same time.
These parks are particularly beautiful for intimate elopements and micro weddings with a small group of people. The forest light is soft and warm. The settings feel quiet and sacred. And the photographs carry a depth and atmosphere that's genuinely hard to replicate anywhere else.
Best time to visit: Late spring through early fall, when roads are fully open and weather is reliable.
What to expect: Permits required for ceremonies in the national park. We handle all permit navigation for you. Expect a cooler environment — layers are your friend.
5. Lone Pine — The Hidden Desert Gem
Lone Pine sits at the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada, at the base of Mount Whitney — and the landscape here is extraordinary. The Alabama Hills, just outside of town, are dramatic rock formations with snow-capped mountains as a backdrop. The combination of desert terrain and alpine peaks in a single frame is rare and stunning.
This is one of our personal favorite locations. It's less traveled than Joshua Tree, which means more space and privacy for your ceremony. The light at golden hour here is some of the most dramatic we've ever seen.
Best time to visit: Spring and fall are ideal. Winter can be cold but beautiful with snow on the mountains.
What to expect: A two-to-three hour drive from Los Angeles. Worth every mile. Relatively low foot traffic, especially on weekdays.
6. Lake Tahoe — Alpine Beauty in Every Season
Lake Tahoe is the kind of place that looks like a painting. Crystal blue water surrounded by pine-covered mountains — in summer, it's lush and warm; in winter, it's snow-dusted and magical. It's one of the most versatile elopement locations in California (and Nevada — Tahoe straddles the state line).
Tahoe is a wonderful choice for couples who want an alpine setting with beautiful accommodations nearby and a slightly more accessible overall logistics picture than some of the more remote California locations.
Best time to visit: Summer for warm weather and wildflowers; winter for snow and a completely different kind of beauty.
What to expect: Multiple stunning viewpoints and beaches, a range of permit requirements depending on exact location, great options for small celebrations.
7. Nojoqui Falls — A Hidden Unpopular Secret
If you want somewhere that feels like a secret — somewhere lush, green, and tucked away — Nojoqui Falls near Santa Barbara is one of our most beloved locations. A short walk through a meadow leads to a beautiful waterfall surrounded by sycamore trees. It's quiet. It's green. And the light filters through the trees in a way that's soft and beautiful.
This is a perfect location for couples who want a more intimate, tucked-away feeling — somewhere that feels personal rather than famous. It pairs beautifully with a California cCast or Santa Barbara itinerary into your timeline.
How to Choose the Right Location for You
The right California elopement location is the one that sounds most like you. Here are a few questions to help you decide:
Do you want ocean views, desert landscapes, or forest scenery?
How physically active do you want your elopement to be? (We can find beautiful locations at every level of accessibility.)
What season are you getting married? Different locations shine at different times of year.
Are you flying into a specific California airport? Some locations are much more accessible from LAX, others from SFO or San Diego.
We're happy to help you think through all of this in a planning call. Location guidance is part of what we do — we'll make sure you're in the right place at the right time of year for the light and the feel you're going for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit to elope in a California national park?
Yes. Most national parks require a permit for wedding ceremonies. Permit requirements, fees, and processes vary by park. When you book with us, our officiant and planner partner handles all permit navigation — you don't need to figure this out alone. Planning and booking your permit is always recommended 3-6 months ahead of time.
What California elopement location is best for international couples?
We recommend the California coast — particularly Big Sur, San Diego Coast, Cambria, and the whole Central to Northern Coast — for international couples. These locations are visually iconic, relatively accessible, and deliver that quintessential California experience. The desert (Joshua Tree, Lone Pine) is a close second, especially for couples who want something more cinematic and unexpected.
Can we elope at a private property or Airbnb in California?
Yes, with the property owner's permission! A private Airbnb, estate, or ranch can be a stunning and incredibly personal elopement location. We love private property elopements and are happy to help you think through logistics if you have a specific space in mind. We have Airbnb favorites throughout iconic locations.
Can you help us choose an elopement location?
Absolutely — this is one of our favorite parts of the planning process. We'll talk through your vision, your travel plans, your preferences, and the time of year, and help you land on a location that genuinely fits.
