At golden hour, the desert goes amber and violet and pink, and the light is some of the most extraordinary we've ever photographed in.

Joshua Tree is one of the most popular elopement destinations in California, and for good reason. The landscape is dramatic without being physically demanding. The access is easy — most of the iconic spots are reachable by car with a short walk. The light is extraordinary, particularly at golden hour and sunrise. Best Locations Within Joshua Tree for Your Elopement
Hidden Valley
One of the most iconic spots in the park — a natural rock enclosure surrounded by massive boulder formations. It's easily accessible (short loop trail from the parking area), offers natural privacy, and the rock formations create a natural backdrop that photographs beautifully. Highly recommended for ceremonies.
Skull Rock
A distinctive rock formation along a short nature trail. Easy to reach, visually striking, and great for portraits. Less private than Hidden Valley but iconic and memorable.
Barker Dam
A short, easy 1.1-mile loop trail that leads to a beautiful natural water feature (seasonal). Surrounded by boulders and joshua trees, this spot feels tucked-away and intimate. One of our favorites for couples who want something a little less trafficked.
Cap Rock
Flat, easily accessible terrain with dramatic rock formations and a paved path. Ideal for couples with mobility considerations or anyone who wants the full Joshua Tree visual experience without any hiking. Beautiful at every time of day.
Best Time of Year to Elope in Joshua Tree
Joshua Tree is genuinely a four-season destination, but timing matters a lot.
October – April: The golden window. Temperatures are comfortable (50s–70s°F during the day), the light is extraordinary, and the park feels at its best. This is when we most recommend planning your elopement.
November – February: Cooler and quieter. You may get snow on the mountains in the background, which creates a stunning contrast with the desert floor. Layers are essential but the solitude is worth it.
March – April: Wildflower season (when conditions are right). The desert can bloom with pops of color that add something magical to your photographs.
May – September: Hot. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F. We do not recommend midday elopements during this period, though sunrise and late-evening sessions are still possible with careful planning.
Accessibility at Joshua Tree
Joshua Tree is one of the more accessible national park elopement destinations in California. Most of the iconic spots are reachable by car with short, relatively flat walks. Specific notes:
Cap Rock and Skull Rock: Paved paths, minimal elevation change. Excellent for all mobility levels.
Hidden Valley: 1-mile loop trail, moderate surface. Manageable for most couples.
Barker Dam: 1.1-mile loop, mostly flat. Some uneven rocky terrain near the dam.
Cholla Cactus Garden: Flat, paved boardwalk. Extremely accessible.

How to Get Legally Married in Joshua Tree
Marriage License
Joshua Tree National Park straddles San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. We recommend obtaining your marriage license from San Bernardino County, as most of the popular ceremony locations fall within it.
Apply in person at the San Bernardino County Clerk's office — both partners must be present.
Bring valid government-issued photo ID (passport accepted for international couples).
Cost: approximately $61–$90.
The license is valid for 90 days. No waiting period — you can marry the same day.
Ceremony Permits
The National Park Service requires a Special Use Permit for wedding ceremonies held within Joshua Tree National Park. Key details:
Apply through the NPS permit office for Joshua Tree. Applications are accepted up to 12 months in advance.
Permit fees vary based on group size and location.
Permits are required for any formal ceremony — including elopements with just the two of you.
