Frequently Asked Questions
Bringing on a photographer to document your wedding day comes with many questions you might not even know to ask.
Frequently Asked Questions
Booking + Process
-
Fill out my contact form and tell me a little about your date, your vision, and where you're coming from. I respond within 24 hours with availability and next steps. From there we'll schedule a call, I'll send a proposal, and a signed contract plus 30% retainer locks on your date.
-
I recommend booking as early as possible — popular dates, especially in spring and fall, can fill 12–18 months out. For elopements, I accept 1–2 overnight destination bookings per month, so early inquiry is especially important if you're planning a destination experience. That said, if your date is close, it's always worth reaching out — I occasionally have openings.
-
I limit the number of bookings I take each year intentionally — quality over quantity is important to me and to the experience my couples deserve. For elopements requiring overnight travel, I take 1–2 per month. For courthouse and local civil ceremonies, I book 2–3 per week. For full weddings, I take a limited number annually.
-
Absolutely and always. Every couple is welcome here — regardless of gender, sexual orientation, culture, or expression. Love is love, and I celebrate all of it.
-
I offer a three-part payment plan. A 30% non-refundable retainer is due at booking to secure your date. A midway payment of half the remaining balance is due at the halfway point between your booking date and your wedding day. The final balance is due two weeks before your wedding. Everything is handled through my fully online system — simple and stress-free.
-
If your date changes, please let me know as soon as possible. A $500 rescheduling fee applies to the new date. If your new date is one I'm no longer available for, I'll send a trusted associate photographer in my place. In the event of a full cancellation, all retainers and any money already put toward travel costs are non-refundable.
-
In the extremely rare event that something beyond my control prevents me from attending — illness, injury, or a true emergency — I would call on my network of trusted associate photographers with a similar style to step in. If I cannot find a suitable replacement, your money would be refunded. This situation is something I take seriously and plan for, so you never have to worry about being left without coverage.
Travel + Logistics
-
Yes — I travel throughout California and nationwide. There is no travel fee for locations within Southern California. For destinations beyond 50 miles from Riverside, travel fees apply and are built into your package pricing transparently — no surprises. I love road trips and will drive if the distance is reasonable, keeping costs lower for my couples.
-
For international destinations, travel fees would be discussed and added to your package. My Two-Day Experience includes all U.S. travel — for international travel, reach out and we'll work out the logistics together.
-
I'm based in Riverside, California and photograph elopements throughout Southern California (Joshua Tree, Palm Springs, Temecula, Los Angeles, San Diego), Central California (Eastern Sierra, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia), Northern California (Big Sur, Lake Tahoe, Redwoods), and nationwide across all 50 states. I limit overnight destination elopements to 1–2 per month to ensure every couple gets my full attention.
-
Most of my California packages include travel. For out-of-state travel, a fee is added to your total package cost and I arrange all transportation and lodging myself — you don't have to manage anything for me. I prefer it this way so that if anything changes with flights or hotels, it doesn't add stress to your planning.
Packages + Coverage
-
Every package includes my personal guidance, a custom photo timeline, vendor recommendations, and location-specific planning for elopements. You'll receive a gallery of high-resolution digital images and film scans with full printing rights. Depending on your collection, you may also receive matted film prints, a video highlight film, Polaroid prints from your day, and a $100 print credit. Specific inclusions vary by package — my pricing guide covers everything in detail.
-
Yes — hourly coverage is available for local courthouse weddings in the Riverside area. For all other sessions, my packages start at a 2-hour minimum. Email me at info@marielacampbell.com with the subject line "Hourly Rates" for more information.
-
That's completely normal — most people aren't, and you don't need to be. I don't ask you to look at the camera and smile. I create a relaxed, fun atmosphere — good music, a little movement, some gentle direction when it helps — and focus on capturing what's actually happening between you. Most couples forget the camera is even there within the first 20 minutes.
-
I don't believe in bad weather — rain, clouds, and dramatic skies often make for the most memorable photos. If conditions are genuinely uncomfortable, we can discuss rescheduling for elopements. For weddings with a booked venue, rescheduling is rarely possible due to venue policies, so we work with whatever the day gives us. I've photographed in all conditions and I'll always make the most of it.
-
I've been a wedding photographer for 15+ years, with the wedding industry as my full-time career for over 11 of those years. Every season has taught me something new and I'm still genuinely excited about this work — that enthusiasm shows in how I approach every couple's day.
Elopements + Destinations
-
An elopement is typically an intimate ceremony with just the two of you — or a very small group — in a meaningful location, focused entirely on the experience rather than the production. A micro wedding is a small wedding with a guest count usually under 30, that may include a ceremony, portraits, and a dinner or reception. I photograph both, and the line between them is often whatever feels right to you.
-
No problem at all — helping you find the right location is part of what I do. When you inquire, all I need is your date and a general sense of what calls to you: desert, coast, forest, mountains, city. From there I'll suggest specific locations that match your vision, the season, and the light.
-
Yes — for elopements I assist with location scouting, timeline building, permit navigation, and vendor recommendations. I don't manage day-of logistics like decor setup, guest coordination, or vendor pickups — if you need that level of support, I'm happy to refer you to an excellent planner. For large weddings, I rely on a planner partner to handle coordination so I can focus entirely on photography.
-
Yes — most national parks, including Joshua Tree, Yosemite, Sequoia, and others, require a Special Use Permit for weddings and ceremonies. The process varies by park but is more straightforward than it sounds. I'll walk you through exactly what you need and help you navigate the application for your chosen location.
-
Yes — completely. California has no residency requirement and no citizenship requirement for a marriage license. All you need is a valid government-issued photo ID (a passport works perfectly), your partner present at the county clerk's office, and the license fee (typically $35–$100 depending on the county). There is no waiting period — you can get your license and get married the same day. Most countries recognize California marriages as legally valid.
-
You and your partner visit any California county clerk's office together with valid photo ID. The license is issued on the spot, costs between $35–$100 depending on the county, and is valid for 90 days. No waiting period, no residency requirement, no blood test. I send a full step-by-step guide to every couple who books with me.
-
Yes — portrait sessions can be built into your elopement timeline. My standard elopement coverage is up to 2 hours, which allows time for travel within Southern California and family portraits if needed. If you'd like more time or want to add a golden hour portrait session at a second location, just mention it when you inquire and we'll build it into your plan.
-
Yes, I take on a limited number of large-scale weddings each year. I'm a boutique photographer which means your experience is always personalized — not handed off to a second team. If you're planning a larger wedding and love my style, reach out and let's talk about what's possible.
Photography + Film
-
Hybrid wedding photography means shooting on both film and digital cameras during the same event. Digital captures every moment reliably and quickly. Film — shot on 35mm or medium format — adds warmth, depth, and an organic quality that digital can't replicate. The two formats are edited to work together seamlessly, giving you a gallery that's both complete and beautiful.
-
35mm film (shot on my Nikon F5) produces images with a warm, nostalgic grain and handles fast-paced moments beautifully — it's ideal for candid coverage throughout your day. Medium format 120mm film (shot on my Fuji GA645) produces larger negatives with exceptional detail, finer grain, and a tonal richness that makes portraits extraordinary. Both are included in my packages — 35mm woven throughout your day, medium format for your portraits and intimate moments.
-
Yes — I can shoot in any combination that works for your day. All of my packages now include film as a standard element, but if you have specific preferences about the ratio of film to digital coverage, that's something we can discuss when we talk through your vision.
-
I edit to honor the environment you chose. My goal is accurate, natural color — warm and true to life, not filtered or heavily manipulated. I edit in a style that closely resembles the look of film, keeping colors as close to what your location actually looked like as possible. I don't believe in dramatic color grading that changes the identity of your location or your day.
-
don't set a fixed number — I deliver every image that meets my professional standards. On average, I deliver 60–80 finished digital images per hour of coverage. For film, each roll of 35mm has 36 exposures, and I typically deliver 60–70% of those as final usable images. Together, you'll receive more than enough to fully relive your day.
-
Digital images are delivered within 8–12 weeks of your wedding day. Film scans are included in that delivery. Video, if included in your package, has a longer turnaround of approximately 12–14 weeks. Turnaround can vary slightly depending on season and my travel schedule — I'll always keep you informed.
Film Photography
We shoot in a hybrid of digital and film — using digital for full-day documentary coverage and film (35mm and medium format) for portraits and intimate moments. Film has a warmth, range of light, and authenticity that digital simply can't replicate. It also forces intentionality: every frame matters.
