Pedro & Gabriela's Joshua Tree National Park Elopement — A Twenty-Year Love Story Comes Full Circle

"Couple standing on boulders at Joshua Tree National Park elopement"

Some love stories don't need a grand venue, a 200-person guest list, or years of planning. Some love stories just need each other — and the right backdrop to say I do.

Pedro and Gabriela's Joshua Tree National Park elopement was exactly that. Raw. Real. Rooted in two decades of friendship, laughter, and a love that had quietly been growing since the fifth grade.

I had the absolute honor of being their elopement photographer through Get Married With Marie's elopement packages — and this one? This one I will carry in my heart for a long, long time.

A Love Story Twenty Years in the Making

Some people search their whole lives for their person. Pedro and Gabriela? They found each other in fifth grade — and they didn't even have to look very far. They lived on the same street.

Two kids, the same neighborhood, the same school hallways, the same world. And yet, it took twenty years for the universe to align them in the way they were always meant to be. From childhood friends to life partners — there is something so quietly magical about a love story that has that kind of history woven into it.

When I met Pedro and Gabriela on their elopement morning, the first thing I noticed was the silence between them that only exists between two people who truly know each other. The kind where words aren't always necessary because the understanding is already there. They communicated in glances, in small smiles, in the way he reached for her hand without thinking about it. Twenty years will do that to two people.

Why Joshua Tree National Park for a Destination Elopement?

If you're searching for a destination elopement location in California that feels otherworldly, intimate, and utterly unforgettable — Joshua Tree National Park belongs at the top of your list.

There's nowhere quite like it. Ancient boulders stacked impossibly high, twisted Joshua trees reaching toward an open sky, and a quiet that feels sacred. It's the kind of landscape that makes you feel small in the best possible way — and it has a way of stripping everything back to what truly matters.

For Pedro and Gabriela, a couple deeply rooted in authenticity and intention, Joshua Tree was the perfect setting. No fluff. No noise. Just love, desert air, and the people who mattered most.

Joshua Tree elopements are ideal for couples who want:

  • An intimate ceremony without the pressure of a traditional wedding

  • Breathtaking natural scenery and golden hour photography

  • The freedom to make the day entirely their own

  • A location that feels adventurous, meaningful, and cinematic all at once

Their Most Important Guests: Family Who Flew Across the World

One of the most beautiful parts of Pedro and Gabriela's elopement was who they chose to share it with. Both originally from Brazil — Gabriela was born in the United States but returned to Brazil when she was just nine months old — they wanted their love story witnessed by the people who knew them best.

Gabriela's parents traveled all the way from Brazil to be there. To stand in the California desert and watch their daughter exchange vows with the boy from down the street who became the love of her life. If that doesn't give you chills, I don't know what will.

There's something so profoundly moving about a small elopement with family — when the guest list is short but every single person in it carries the full weight of love and meaning. Gabriela's parents weren't just witnesses to a wedding ceremony. They were witnesses to the closing of a chapter that began long before either of them could have imagined it would end this way.

The Elopement Day: Desert Magic with Get Married With Marie

"Couple exchanging vows during Joshua Tree National Park elopement with officiant"

Pedro and Gabriela's elopement was planned through Let’s Get Married With Marie, a beautifully curated elopement service that takes the overwhelm out of planning an intimate ceremony and replaces it with ease, intention, and joy. One of the things that makes Marie's packages so special is that couples get to choose their photographer from Marie's personally vetted pool of photographers — each one carefully selected for their ability to capture real, authentic, human moments.

I was blessed to be the photographer chosen for this one.

We gathered among the boulders and Joshua trees as the desert light began to soften — that perfect, moody California sky casting everything in shades of silver and warmth. Gabriela wore a flowing white ruffled gown with tall brown cowboy boots and a blush faux fur jacket that felt both romantic and completely her. Pedro was handsome in a warm tan suit, a peach and yellow boutonniere pinned to his lapel.

And the florals? Absolutely breathtaking. The bouquet and boutonniere were part of the Let’s Get Married With Marie, package, beautifully crafted by the incredibly talented team at The Nature of Things — and they did not disappoint. A lush, wildly gorgeous arrangement of peach ranunculus, rust dahlias, orange protea, billy balls, and eucalyptus that felt like it had grown straight out of the desert itself. The kind of florals that make you stop mid-shot just to appreciate them. If you're planning a desert elopement and want florals that are as intentional and stunning as the landscape around you, The Nature of Things is who you call.

Their officiant, part of the Let’s Get Married With Marie, team, guided them through their vows with such warmth and presence. And when Pedro and Gabriela stood face to face, holding hands in front of those ancient rocks and towering trees, with Gabriela's parents just steps away — the whole world felt like it exhaled.

The Ceremony: When Silence Speaks Loudest

I've photographed a lot of elopements. And I'll tell you — there's always a moment. A single frame in time where everything crystallizes and you know, this is why I do this work.

For Pedro and Gabriela, it was during their vows. Twenty years of shared history, of growing up, of finding their way back to each other, all held quietly in a desert ceremony that lasted maybe 15 minutes.

Small in size. Infinite in meaning.

Gabriela's parents stood nearby, and if you looked closely, you could see it on their faces too — that bittersweet, full-hearted pride that only a parent feels watching their child step into the life they've always hoped for them.

After the ceremony, we wandered through the boulders, scrambled up rocks, laughed through couple portraits, and chased the last of the light. Pedro and Gabriela ran hand in hand through the desert like they had nowhere else they needed to be — because they didn't. They were exactly where they were meant to be.

Planning Your Own Joshua Tree Elopement

Are you dreaming of a Joshua Tree National Park elopement? Here's what you need to know:

Permits: You will need a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service to hold a ceremony in Joshua Tree National Park. Apply early, as availability is limited.

Best time to elope at Joshua Tree: Spring (March–May) and Fall (September–November) offer the most comfortable temperatures. Avoid peak summer heat if possible. Golden hour in the desert is truly unmatched.

What to wear: Think flowy, romantic, and practical. Desert terrain means you'll want comfortable shoes — Gabriela's cowboy boots are chef's kiss proof that you can be stylish AND practical. Layers are key as temperatures can drop quickly after sunset.

Keep it intimate: The magic of a desert elopement lives in its simplicity. You don't need much — just each other, someone to marry you, and someone to capture it all.
