There is a specific feeling you get standing in Yosemite Valley for the first time. The cliffs rise so high they block the sky. The waterfalls drop so far you can hear them before you see them. The granite is ancient in a way that makes everything feel small — in the best possible sense.

It's the kind of place that makes people want to get married.

I've photographed elopements and micro weddings in Yosemite and throughout the Sierra Nevada, and what I can tell you is this: no amount of reading about it prepares you for how it actually feels to say your vows with Half Dome in the background. It's one of those experiences that earns the word epic.

Yosemite is the California elopement destination that couples from across the world — the UK, Australia, Europe, Japan — name first when they picture getting married in America. If it's calling you, I know how to make it happen.

Why Couples Choose Yosemite for Their Elopement

The scale is genuinely humbling. Standing in Yosemite Valley with El Capitan on one side and Half Dome on the other, you feel the weight of the place. That feeling translates directly into photographs.

The variety is extraordinary. Yosemite isn't one location — it's dozens. Tunnel View. Valley Floor. Glacier Point. Mariposa Grove. Mirror Lake. Each offers a completely different mood, and I know which ones photograph best at which times of day and season.

The light in the valley is famous for good reason. Early morning in Yosemite Valley, when the mist is still sitting in the pines and the cliffs are catching the first sun, is something that has to be seen to be understood. I plan sessions around it.

It's a bucket-list destination for international couples. If you're traveling to California from abroad, Yosemite may well be the reason. Eloping here lets you turn a trip of a lifetime into a wedding of a lifetime.

What an Elopement in Yosemite Looks Like

What an Elopement in Yosemite Looks Like

Every Yosemite elopement I photograph is built around three things: the light, the location, and you.

Location scouting is part of what I do. I'll match your vision to the right spot in the park — whether that's the valley floor, the rim, or a hidden trail most visitors never find.

Permits are required and I'll help you navigate them. Yosemite National Park requires a Special Use Permit for weddings and ceremonies. I'll walk you through the application from start to finish.

Timing is everything in Yosemite. The valley can fill up quickly with day visitors. I build timelines that put us in the best light and the quietest moments — often early morning or the last hour before sunset.

Film is always part of the story. Every session includes 35mm film photography alongside digital coverage. The combination of film grain and Yosemite's epic landscapes is something I never get tired of.

Planning Your California Elopement From Abroad

For Destination + International Couples

Yosemite is one of the most-searched elopement destinations in the world. You don't need US residency or citizenship to get married in California. A valid photo ID, your partner, and a quick trip to the county clerk's office is all it takes. No waiting period. California marriage licenses are available to anyone.

Fresno Yosemite International Airport is the closest airport to the park (about 1.5 hours). San Francisco and Sacramento are both under 4 hours by car.

I recommend booking 6–12 months in advance for Yosemite, especially for peak spring and fall dates.

FAQ

  • Yes. The National Park Service requires a Special Use Permit for all weddings and elopements within Yosemite. I'll help you navigate the application — it requires advance planning, so reaching out early is important.

  • Spring (April–June) brings waterfalls at their peak and wildflowers on the valley floor — stunning, but also the busiest season. Fall (September–November) offers warm days, smaller crowds, and beautiful golden light. Winter elopements with snow are breathtaking and deeply intimate.

  • For Yosemite specifically, I recommend reaching out 6–12 months ahead. Permits are competitive and peak dates book early.

  • Absolutely. If you want to build a multi-location Sierra experience — Yosemite one day, Sequoia or Kings Canyon another — the Two-Day Experience is designed exactly for that kind of itinerary.

  • You and your partner visit any California county clerk's office together with a valid photo ID. No waiting period, no blood test, no residency requirement.

  • Yes — I have trusted recommendations for both, specific to the Yosemite and Sierra region. Just ask when you inquire and I'll connect you with the right people for your vision.

  • I keep Fridays and Saturdays for full weddings, so elopements are available Sunday–Thursday.

  • I limit overnight destination elopements to 1–2 per month to make sure every couple gets full preparation and attention. Yosemite books fast — spring and fall dates especially. Reaching out early matters here
