Solvang + Santa Barbara Elopement Photographer

Hidden waterfalls, vineyard hills, and Spanish colonial coastline

Let's Plan Your Elopement →

Solvang and Santa Barbara give you a version of California that feels almost European — rolling vineyard hills, Danish-style architecture, red-tile roofs against blue coastline. It's romantic in a completely different register than the mountains or desert, and it's one of the easiest regions on this list to move through on your wedding day.

Elope in Solvang — Nojoqui Falls & Beyond

Solvang is a secret that elopement couples are just starting to discover. Nestled in the Santa Ynez Valley, it's surrounded by oak-covered hiking trails, hidden waterfalls, and golden meadows that look like they were designed for a wedding day.

My favorite spot? Nojoqui Falls Regional Park — a 160-foot waterfall at the end of a shaded canyon trail. It's private, it's dramatic, and it photographs like nothing else in Southern California.

What a Solvang elopement day can look like:

➡ Morning getting ready at a charming inn or Airbnb in the village

➡ Hike into Nojoqui Falls for your ceremony

➡ Golden hour portraits in the meadows or vineyards

➡ Picnic celebration or dinner in the village after

➡ No need to rush the drive home — plan to stay the night nearby and savor the trip out here

Santa Barbara — Timeless, Romantic, Unforgettable

Just 45 minutes from Solvang, Santa Barbara brings a completely different kind of magic. Spanish colonial architecture, lush courtyard gardens, the Pacific coast, and that iconic golden California light that photographers dream about.

I've had the honor of photographing weddings and elopements throughout Santa Barbara — from intimate garden ceremonies to full wedding days — and every single one has taken my breath away.

Why Solvang + Santa Barbara for Your Elopement

However you define adventure — a long hike, a short walk, or simply showing up fully present — this is a place that can hold it.

This region rewards couples who want charm without sacrificing ease. Most of what makes it beautiful — vineyard views, a hidden waterfall, Spanish colonial streets — is reachable without any real hiking. It's also an easy add-on if you're already eloping somewhere in the Central Coast

Where We Can Elope

Nojoqui Falls Regional Park: A 164-foot waterfall tucked into a shaded canyon. The trail in is under a mile round trip, mostly flat and shaded — an easy walk to a genuinely dramatic backdrop. Requires a Santa Barbara County special event permit.

Solvang: Danish-style streets, courtyards, and gardens right in town — zero hiking, entirely walkable, and largely permit-free for small ceremonies.

Santa Barbara Coastline & Vineyards: From clifftop coastal viewpoints to hillside vineyard settings, this stretch offers dramatic backdrops that are drive-up or short-walk accessible.

Best Time of Year

Spring and fall are ideal — green hills in spring, golden vineyard color in fall, and mild temperatures both seasons. Summer is warm but manageable with morning or evening timing.

Permits

Solvang itself is largely permit-free for small ceremonies in public spaces. Nojoqui Falls Regional Park requires a Santa Barbara County special event permit, which I help coordinate as part of your planning.

Getting Here

Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is the closest airport, with Solvang about 45 minutes north. Travel is included in every package.

A couple eloping here might exchange vows at the base of Nojoqui Falls in the morning light, then wander Solvang's courtyards for portraits before an evening toast overlooking the vineyards.

My couples choose this region because:

➡ It's accessible from LA, the Bay Area, and beyond

➡ It offers diverse landscapes (waterfall, forest, vineyard, coast, architecture)

➡ It's less saturated than Big Sur or Malibu — more space, more privacy

➡ The light here is unreal — especially in golden hour

➡ Solvang + Santa Barbara together = an epic two-location elopement day

For Destination + International Couples

Solvang and Santa Barbara are a rare combination for couples traveling from abroad — Solvang is a true hidden gem, the kind of place most visitors to California never discover, while Santa Barbara is the iconic, postcard-California landmark you've already pictured. Together, they give you the best of both: a destination that feels undiscovered, and one that feels unmistakably California.

And getting here is easier than you'd think. Santa Barbara has its own airport (SBA), with LAX just under two hours south — so you can land, settle in, and start your adventure without a long haul across the state. California also has no residency or citizenship requirement for a marriage license, which means planning your elopement here is far more straightforward than most international couples expect.
