Northern California + Redwoods Elopement Photographer

Film + Digital · Ancient Forests · Dramatic Coastline · NorCal

There is something that happens when you stand beneath an ancient redwood for the first time. The scale of it — hundreds of feet tall, thousands of years old — quietly rearranges your sense of what matters.

It's the right feeling to have on your wedding day.

The Northern California redwood forests stretch along the coast from Sonoma County all the way up to the Oregon border, and they are some of the most extraordinary places I've ever photographed in. The light is cathedral-soft. The silence is complete. The trees make everything feel sacred without trying.

Paired with the Northern California coast — crashing surf, sea stacks, fog rolling in at golden hour — this region offers one of the most varied and visually stunning elopement experiences in the entire state

Why Northern California for Your Elopement

The redwoods are genuinely irreplaceable. There is no substitute for the feeling of a ceremony under ancient trees. The scale, the quiet, the light filtering through the canopy — it photographs unlike anything else.

The NorCal coast is its own world. Rugged, dramatic, and deeply atmospheric. The coastline between Mendocino and Crescent City is wild in a way that Southern California simply isn't.

European and international couples often choose NorCal. The combination of forest + ocean resonates deeply with couples from the UK, Scandinavia, and Australia — it feels familiar and extraordinary at the same time.

It's relatively uncrowded. Compared to Big Sur or Yosemite, Northern California draws fewer destination visitors. That means more privacy and more flexibility.

Where We Can Elope in Northern California

Humboldt Redwoods State Park — home to the Avenue of the Giants and some of the most awe-inspiring old-growth forest on earth.

Prairie Creek Redwoods / Fern Canyon — lush fern-covered canyon walls, Roosevelt elk in the meadows, and old-growth forest. Other-worldly.

Mendocino Coast — dramatic sea cliffs, wildflower headlands, and Victorian architecture. One of California's most romantic coastal towns.

Patrick's Point State Park — rocky headlands, tide pools, and ocean views surrounded by spruce forest. Quieter and more intimate than the major parks.

The Lost Coast — for couples who want to truly get away. One of the most remote stretches of coastline in California, with zero crowds and extraordinary wild beauty.

For Destination + International Couples

Northern California and the Redwoods are remote in the best way, and getting there is more manageable than the map suggests. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the easiest international gateway, with connections from nearly every continent, and from there it's about a 6-hour scenic drive up Highway 101 — or a short connector flight into the regional Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport (ACV) to cut the drive down to minutes. The logistics on the ground are genuinely simple. California has no residency or citizenship requirement for a marriage license. Your passport and your partner are all you need.

Planning Your California Elopement From Abroad

For Destination + International Couples

Northern California is one of the most popular California regions for couples traveling from Europe and Australia — the combination of redwood forest and rugged coastline is genuinely unlike anything in most of the world. The closest major airports are San Francisco (SFO) and Oakland (OAK), both of which have direct international flights. From there it's a 3–4 hour drive north to the redwood region. California has no residency or citizenship requirement for a marriage license.
