The redwoods are genuinely irreplaceable. There is no substitute for the feeling of a ceremony under ancient trees. The scale, the quiet, the light filtering through the canopy — it photographs unlike anything else.

The NorCal coast is its own world. Rugged, dramatic, and deeply atmospheric. The coastline between Mendocino and Crescent City is wild in a way that Southern California simply isn't.

Planning Your California Elopement From Abroad

For Destination + International Couples

Northern California is one of the most popular California regions for couples traveling from Europe and Australia — the combination of redwood forest and rugged coastline is genuinely unlike anything in most of the world. The closest major airports are San Francisco (SFO) and Oakland (OAK), both of which have direct international flights. From there it's a 3–4 hour drive north to the redwood region. California has no residency or citizenship requirement for a marriage license.

The redwoods are beautiful year-round, but fall (September–November) is my personal favorite — the air is clear, the light is warm, and the forests feel particularly magical. Summer brings coastal fog, which creates a moody, ethereal atmosphere that I love for film photography. Winter is quiet and dramatic
