North Shore (Kings Beach, Tahoe City) — quieter, more local, with beautiful sandy shores and mountain views, most reachable within a few minutes' walk of parking.

Donner Lake — just over the pass from Truckee, smaller and more private than Tahoe proper, with easy lakeside access.

Fallen Leaf Lake — a hidden gem south of the main lake. Smaller, surrounded by forest, and almost completely private, with easy access near the road.
